For several centuries the Golden Cross passage was known as Steelyard or Stiliard Shut. A steelyard was a commercial balance for weighing all manner of merchandise. The Stiliard Lounge is one of the oldest parts of the hotel and overlooks the length of Golden Cross Passage.
